Rue David Johnston
China in Aquitaine
This long street runs from the Public Gardens to the old gateway to the Medoc. It is named after a former mayor of Bordeaux (from 1838 to 1842) who was also initiated industrialized china manufacturing in Aquitaine. David Johnston (1789-1858) was the adoptive son of Walter Johnston, a rich Irish-born merchant. On his death in 1819, David was left with a fortune and in 1834, he set up his china factory in Bacalan which was to employ as many as 700 people.
